More About Yoga

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. There are many interpretations of this, but generally one can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. The West is often more focussed on the physical aspects of Yoga – the asana’s or postures. Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the majority of which are more concerned with mental and spiritual well-being.

The benefits of Yoga are vast, and more scientific studies are being done to verify these claims. The more often you are able to attend a class, the more you are exposed to Yoga’s benefits.  I recommend attending at least two to three classes a week.

Benefits of Regular Practice:

  • Stress and anxiety reduction
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved sleep patterns
  • Improved muscle tone and strength
  • Improved breathing
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improved body awareness

Studies also show that Yoga can improve the standard of living for those suffering from disease including Cancer, HIV and AIDS.

More About Me

"Carey is a natural teacher / instructor. She understands the meaning behind and nature of the practice and gives her full focus to participants. " SUNFit Student

From small beginnings –  attending two to three classes a week – my interest grew incrementally and I felt my world shift beneath me. I soon found myself leaving the television industry for a more charitable cause, and attending daily classes at Living Yoga - even helping with admin to ensure I could attend as often as possible!

I joined Meditation evenings guided by my wise friend and teacher
Mark Joseph, who helped cultivate in me a keen interest in Buddhism and mindfulness.

The moments I have experienced in both my asana (postural) and meditation practices have been life changing and continue to inspire and motivate me to explore deeper.

Beside my love of Yoga is a love of nature and the great outdoors. I have been known to jump out planes, and off high cliffs, as well as plunging into icy mountain pools in my favorite place (to date) the Drakensberg.
